Cambria Weekend

Oh well...we're new parents, it is expected we'd forget things, right? Well, we didn't bring the formula to supplement the nighttime feedings, which we usually give an extra ounce or so to make sure she gets enough and sleeps more soundly. And we forgot the carry-pack, to carry her around in. She was very fussy. Almost made the trip not worth it, except she did sleep some. We went wine tasting on Saturday to stock up our wine-fridge, and she was good then, and that was the "most important" time. I think she just didn't like the LONG car ride, she slept the whole way, but I think she had "jet lag" or something...

Anyway, after the wineries (our favorite was Windward), we went and had a decent meal at Mustache Pete's. Although we had to eat in shifts, as there were some LOUD patrons which woke Summer up, which is quite a feat, since she can sleep through at the bowling alley!!

OK, so everyone knows by now, I LOVE to put up photos...Here is the only decent shot we got of Summer in Cambria...and it wasn't even Cambria specific...it was one of those rare moments she was quiet in her swing (and she was screaming at other moments in the swing, too...she just happened to be OK now and then. We really needed to bring more toys to show her and play with her, too.)

Summer Content in her Swing

This last pic, I just thought was cool. This was from Friday morning, just before we left for Cambria. I was taking these close-ups to try and focus on her eye-lashes, which as you can see are getting very long and pretty.

Close-Close-up of Summer's Face

OK, I am SUPER late for work now...I should have done this last night. :-) til next time. Hopefully, Summer will be more happy back home. Wish Mommy luck today!

Grandpa Mark - Pic update Aug 26

OK, so downloaded pics and need to show off the baby...but first, we got confirmation Grandpa Mark is coming!!!! Yay!!! Summer's gonna miss Grandma Deb, but she'll have to make it another time. GmaD just got a new job and can't quite make it out, and GpaM works hard during the summer, so this is the first chance he's had to get away. Finally, my dad is going to make it out here, so he can get his mug up on the blog! His will be a short trip, but we plan on getting in a little father/son golf outing while Jess is at work and Summer's in daycare...we'll pick Summer up right away after and then he'll be around the whole weekend. I'm sure we'll get some good pics! This is in 4 weeks...see ya soon, dad!

OK, so pics...Other than this one from today (Summer loves her thumb), we haven't taken any since the vaccinations:

Summer Sucking her Thumb

I'm writing this post, as I woke up (Jess poked me) at 5...to feed Summer. Now I had to download these pics and put up this update before heading out this weekend, as I think we'll take LOTSA pictures. We're heading up to Cambria for our second anniversary. Going to the same hotel as last year.

Anyway, onto more pics. Jess has taken a few more, before the vaccinations. And these were the cutest, Summer posing with a stuffed animal...I don't know how she got Summer to hold that Kitty.

Summer Holding Kitty

Here she is a little closer:

Other pics from before the vaccincations are of me reading to Summer. I was reading "Scamp".

Summer and Daddy Reading Scamp

Same day, I took a pic of Jess holding Summer, as she was falling asleep.

Summer Sleeping in Mommy's Arms

Last pic I want to show off is from our anniversary night itself. Jess's Pop took this shot just before we went out. Thanks again folks for baby-sitting for us! Look at the happy couple!

Happy Couple

OK, it's "late" (early) I need to try and get back to sleep for a few hours before we get up, pack and drive up north!

I want Summer back!!!!

:-( How sad... Summer is still in pain from her shots. Last night I got home and looked at her legs, and the right leg, the one with two shots seemed a bit swollen, but not too bad. The left leg, though, OUCH...it was swollen and felt like it had a knot in it, kinda like your back when it's sore. She was crying and crying and I tried to rub/massage her leg, and she liked it for a moment, then cried, then seemed to help a little. I put some of her Tylenol in her nighttime bottle and we got her to sleep at about 11. She woke at 4 and 7 for her next feedings, which is fairly good, but not like JUST before her shots.

I left for work Monday morning and Summer was such the perfect baby. I saw a hint of her at the doctors office, before the shot, but ever since the needle went into her leg...she's back to her 1-2 week old self. :-( Her cries are now deafening again and she can go from a smile to full on wail in a split second.

Anyway, she hasn't had a good night's sleep since, but it seems she's getting closer. I gave her a little Tylenol this morning, as well, so, hopefully she can get back to sleep, so both her and Jess can get more rest. Yesterday she was bad from 3-7pm, when I got home... She has smiled and has watched some Baby Einstein videos, so she's calming some. Today WILL be better! (Can I will it to be?)

Also, Tuesday was Mommy and Daddy's two year anniversary and Summer's Grand-parents came over to baby-sit! Yay!! Jess and I got to go out and have a nice romantic dinner. Thank you, Jess! That was the best surprise for a present!!! Thank you Gigi and Grumpa!!! We had a great time!

What I really want to show from that night, is Grumpa scanned a picture of Jess as a baby! Check it out:

Baby Jessica

Comparing that to pictures of Summer...now who does Summer look like? She's the spitting image of her Mommy, as far as we can tell! So, now I have to find some pics of me as a baby, but I don't think that will change anything. Thankfully, Summer is going to look like her much more atractive mother. :-)

Vaccination Update

So, yesterday Summer had her three shots. When I got home after work, she was slightly fussy and felt a little warm, so I gave her a small dose of liquid acetaminophen. She would be fussy about wanting to walk, as always, but last night when she would be fussy she cried loudly, just like the "good ol' days." Pretty tough, but not as bad as it could be, as she was consolable, mostly, and she would smile back and play a little.

Jessica fed her at 8PM and I took off the bandaids while she was eating, hoping Summer wouldn't notice so much, and it seemed to work, as she flinched a little, but didn't stop eating or start crying. So, you can see the little needle holes where they went in...that's pretty sad. Such a visual reminder. Should go away in a day or two.

Anyway, she lost her sleep pattern we had her on. After Jess fed her, I took her and walked and tried to get her sleepy, and her eyes would shut for moments, but never for long. She finally passed out on my lap at 10...I was downstairs watching TV and was about to go ahead and feed her if she didn't stop fussing, as she was chewing at her hands, but she passed out for a longer time and I napped off and on until 11:20 when she was more awake. I got her alert enough to eat and fed her until 12 when she fell asleep...The last week or so, when we'd feed her at this time she would most likely stay asleep until 6 or 7...but she was up at 4 and 7. D'oh!!!

I left Jessica this morning, still feeding. HOPEFULLY Jess can get Summer down and get herself back to sleep for a few hours...sweet dreams ladies. xoxox

2 Month Well Child Visit

Well, this morning at 10:00 AM we had our 2 month appointment for Summer. Everything looks good so far! 11 lbs 10.5 ounces. 22 inches long, head was about 15.5 inches around. All joints look good, strength in legs and arms is all good. She is smiling and cooing and very alert, which we've mentioned before, and that's all normal, so we're right on track with a happy healthy baby!

The bad part...the shots. Three shots containing something like 6 vaccinations. Two shots in her left thigh and one shot in her right thigh. I let her grip my fingers with both hands, Jessica was rubbing her head, I was singing to her and she SCREAMED!!!!! Right after the last shot I put her nuk in her mouth and held her up and she immediately stopped crying...for a moment. It was about time for her to eat as well...it had been 4 hours, and she usually eats every 2.5-3 hours. The docs took a while, but that's OK. Jess had brought a bottle and I fed her immediately. She was crying off and on as I fed her, and after the first 2 ounces she was pretty quiet and we walked back to the car. She pretty much finished the bottle in the car and seemed pretty OK. Strapped her in her seat and Mommy drove home with her, as I went back to work.

I'll try and put up another update tonight/tomorrow to update how she's doing after the shots settle in. So far, she seems OK. Hopefully the food helps calm her and makes her sleepy so she can just rest through most of it.

Video Capture

I downloaded some video, and this may be much more work than most want to do...but if you click on this first picture, save the file to your PC. When you try to open it, most likely you will be asked to figure out what program to use...you'll need the latest version of Apple's Quicktime, which you can download here. This link is for windows users, surf around the site if you are using a Mac. I'll look for a way to host a video directly in the blog someday, but for now, this will have to do. Please leave comments if you get this to work, don't get it to work, thanks!

Anyway, this video shows Summer in my lap, and she's cooing. Shows how she's starting her attempts to communicate.

Summer Cooing

This other image is just a picture ripped from a short video of Summer in the bath with Mommy. It's cropped in pretty tight and then blown up, so it's not the best image, but it has a great smile on Summer's face as she's getting her hair washed.

Reading

Here are those pics of Summer reading with Mommy:

Interested Reader

Wow'd Reader

Also, along the lines that I mentioned in the last two posts, Summer is becoming more aware of her surroundings. Jessica showed Summer Cheeto. We've both shown her all the cats, and have put her hands on the cats, but she never really "saw" them. Yesterday she figured it out, that they were something different. Cheeto came up and Summer was looking all around, so Mommy turned Summer to see, and POW, a light turned on, her eyes got wide and bugged outta her head.

And when Mommy put your hands on Cheeto, you actually started moving your hands and petting (hitting) Cheeto on his back. Now we'll have to introduce you to the rest of the kitties.

Sitting Pretty

These pics just in from Jessica...Oh MY gosh!!! So, super cute! Told you she can sit up in the Boppy! :-)

Jinx...

I sure don't want to jinx ourselves, but Summer has slept pretty well the last few days. Last night was kind of nice in that she woke up at 4:30, I fed her and walked her for a short time, put her down and she fell asleep without any crying at all, and slept another 3 hours (from 5:30 - 8:30). Here she is at 8:30 this morning:

Sleeping Beauty

When I first looked in on her, her left leg was touching the wall...she is SO LONG! but when I went to get the camera she heard me walking around and wriggled around a little bit. I put her in the long way and she moves to that position, to get her head against the wall for comfort I imagine.

Anyway, I know many will ask, "What is she doing on her face?!?" Well, Jess and I have discussed this and yes, SIDS is more likely in the case of her lying on her stomach, but it's a 1000 to 1 chance, versus 1500 to 1 on her back...pretty unlikely either way, and we don't do it all the time. It is much more comfortable for her and her neck is very strong. We've let her sleep like that with us awake and watching, and she has very good control over her head. We put her down on her back at times and will try to get her more on her back, as she learns to sleep better and better. We just have to take it one day at a time. So, please, don't judge. She's doing very well and is very happy. Which reminds me of one other thing I didn't mention in my last big long post.

I mentioned how she sticks out her tongue and is very alert, and I've mentioned before she seems to smile a little. Well, nowadays she is very cognizant of who we are and smiles and kinda giggles. When I came home last night and took her in my lap and leaned her back against my legs, she lit up and smiled and giggled and stuck out her tongue. She was really good, hardly any screaming and when she did, a quick diaper change took care of it. She loves playing with mommy and daddy.

Just as I was leaving Jessica had finished feeding her and was reading her Goodnight Moon. I took a few pictures and one or two were pretty good, I'll post one later.

Aug 14, 2005

Here is a great pic of Summer that Jessica took on the 14th. Summer, right this second is crying in her crib, trying to fall asleep. I fed her from 4:44 til 5:30...walked with her half an hour, and she's back and forth, sleepy. Will have to interupt this writing to walk her some more...but going to put up this pic first, then I'll update how she's been doing lately. The picture is formatted for a standard 4x6 print, if you click on it, download it and want to print it out...
So, here she is:

Summer being changed (in Sepia)

So, she stopped crying and I checked on her and she rotated herself 90 degrees in the crib and quieted herself down. Took her about 8 minutes. She's learning we won't come right away and she is getting much better at putting herself to sleep.

So, all the dirt. Summer has been changing a lot lately. Not only is she getting bigger (she's 11.6 lbs, last I checked about two days ago...so she's probably about 11 pounds 10 ounces), she's getting longer. She's about 21 inches long, that's me measuring with a tape measure while Jessica is holding her, so she if possibly longer. Her doctors appointment is next Monday, so we'll get some "official" weight and length then.

Summer is starting to not just cry, but she's trying to mimic our voices, our talking. She moans and grunts, and we try to "speak" back to her a little in turn, trying to support her attempts at speaking. Obviously that is a LONG time away, but they (books and websites) say to mimic her back and help her see that certain actions get certain replies.

Not only is Summer trying to talk, she's standing much more. At first she would stand when she'd cry, just push out her legs and she'd pop up. Now she likes to do it all the time. We just put her sitting in our lap and she'll push out and stand up. Absolutely no control over balance, but she loves standing up. I've also put her sitting up, and with her boppy, she can stay sitting for a moment, but tends to fall forward. She's gaining her balance and trying. You can really see it in her eyes, she's trying hard.

Her focus is also increasing. She can lock onto things and really see what's happening. She notices the TV, so we turn the swing away from it, so she can't see. If we don't, she'll just stare. She also likes to stare at lights or places on the wall. Anything with a bit of contrast, so it stands out. One big thing, is she's always kinda looked up at the lights on her portable swing, but never noticed/looked at the fish on the mobile on her regular swing. Well, about 2 or 3 days ago, I first noticed that when I turned on the fish mobile, she looked up and stared at the fish turning round and round. When the fish stop turning (everything's on a timer) she gets upset and will start crying. She used to be like that with the music. Have the songs playing on the swing and when the timer ran out, she'd cry, basically telling us, "Hey, mommy/daddy, my music stopped, please turn it back on!" We'd go turn it on and she'd lose herself back in the music. Well, now she's like that with the mobiles. With or without the music, she really notices moving objects now.

We're not too sure about looking at herself in a mirror. We haven't gotten a crib mirror yet, but both Jessica and I hold her up to our bedroom mirror and hall mirror, and she'll look at herself, or us in the mirror. We can tell she recognizes us, but no idea what she thinks seeing herself.

One last(?) thing, she is starting to show early signs of teething pains. They (again, books and such) say that when the baby spits up/makes bubbles and chew on their nuk pretty hard, they are feeling something. It seems way too early, and she's likely just playing with her spittle. Just her playing and doing these things makes us think that she's noticing more and more that she has some sort of control over things, as she spittles and puts her hands in her mouth, so I think she's noticing that she can get her own hands wet. She's a lot better at putting her hands in her mouth to pacify herself, that's for sure.

Let's see, what else? We called the breast pump manufacturer and they helped us adjust the pump and it works now. It wasn't working and Jess could hand express faster and it was quite annoying, not catching up and able to freeze any milk for daycare (which is coming up in 3 weeks). Since we called on my off Friday, everything is much better and we have 4 big bags saved up, ready to go. And it appeasrs we'll (Jess'll) be able to get much more ready. We still supplement with formula a little bit at night, but even that is less, since she's getting more milk more consistently.

Speaking of at night. As mentioned above, she is learning how to put herself to sleep a little better, so at night we make sure she gets a good amount of food, put her down and she'll sleep for 4-5.5 hours. We're trying to get her on a set schedule and we're defintely getting closer to that goal. Three more weeks to get it a bit more set. Don't get me wrong, she's still a fussy little baby, that likes to scream when she wants something. More than anything else she likes to walk, not just sitting and bouncing. Car seat/swing, none of it seems to work exactly well. We're push-overs and walk and walk and walk her all over.

I think that covers most everything, except a few mosquito bites or something on her leg, but that's no big deal. She's never had a fever, no diaper rash has returned since that second time and she still loves her baths and she's basically healthy and happy overall. She still loves to stick her tongue out at me and she sticks it out far and pointy. She does it with mommy, too, but not so far out. She's SO CUTE! I'll see if I can ever catch that on "film" as well.

I've downloaded some more video, so I'll be able to pull off some more pics and see if I can host a couple quick/small videos as well for a later post. Now, I have to get ready and get myself to work.

Anyway, we're still both amazed every day how much she grows and how much more she notices all the time.

Summer's Future Playmate...

Or future competition, if you listen to how Gus and I talk about our daughters. This pic is Summer being held by Gus's wife Chellei and sitting with them is Laila, Gus and Chellei's daughter.

Summer with Chellei and Laila

I work with Gus, we've become good friends and we're competitive over EVERYTHING. We play cards, ping pong, bet on football games, etc... We always talk smack about how Summer/Laila will kick the other's butt in anything...tennis, golf, you name it! Pretty funny...I don't think we really mean it...but, I sure hope they have the chance to grow up friends and play together. If they both get their father's competitive spirit, then so be it... :-)

The Dave's

Hey all...finally getting a moment to catch up and put up a few more pics... My cousin David and his partner Dave came to visit and stayed with us a few nights. Dave and I played a couple games of cribbage...he beat me both games... one was close, he outplayed/pegged me one hand which made the difference, the other I was blowing him outta the water, by hitting a nice 24 hand, then he got 6 hands in a row averaging 12 points and ended up beating me by about three pegs again.

This first pic has a good view of Summer:

David with Summer

This second one is really cute, and you can see them both pretty well:

David with Summer 2

Now here Summer is with Dave:

Summer with Dave

And here they are all together:

Summer and The Daves

Lastly, for pics in this post, is Summer having breakfast with everyone. I made breakfast a couple times while Bob, Ginger and the Dave's were here. She always joined us at the table!

Well, the Dave's were here a few nights, then went off to enjoy their family reunion with (David's Mom) Aunt Dee and the rest, can see her in a previous post... After that leg of the trip they came back to spend two more nights here...and on Wednesday night I hosted my regular poker party. My buddy Tom took that pic of me holding Summer at the poker table that night, which you can also see in a previous post. David got 4th in the tourney and Dave got 3rd. So, fun was had by all. First time I hosted the game at home in well over a year. It was pretty cool. We'll have to do it again, sometime, Daves!!

OPP (Other People's Pics)

Got these from others... The first two are from Grumpa (Jess' Dad) from when we went bowling. Here is Summer with Mommy:

Summer will be bowling soon!

Here Summer is eating with Gigi at the bowling alley. I really like this picture. Cool close-up!

Eating with Gigi

This last one is from last Wednesday. When The Dave's were here we decided to play poker at our place on Wednesday, since the regular hosts were out of town...which meant I had to keep an eye on Summer as Jess went out with her friend. Summer made a better good luck charm for Shana, whom ended up holding her for a moment and doubling up and then winning the tournament. I just got lucky enough to be home with Summer and share my poker with her...

Rain???

Nope, not rain...pee.

I got peed on for the first time last night. Not while changing, but while walking her to her bath with Mommy. I've done this before; I'll wrap her in a thin diaper, typically fold it up a lot to catch anything...last night I was lazy and kept it thin...I thought, this is silly, it could happen...and, sure enough, it did! :-) HAHA!!

Funny how a baby can throw up on you, pee on you, POOP on you and you think to yourself, or even say to her, "ewww, ick." And that's about it, not an ounce of anger or anything. If anything, I'm upset at myself for not being more careful. It sure isn't Summer's fault. Makes me laugh.

Last night she was up ALL NIGHT!!! Or a long part of it...(while with me) I had the early shift, hoping to feed her around 11 and get to bed....well, with her being wide awake and "chatty" I was up with her until about 2AM... Then Jess took over and ended up sleeping with her in the spare bedroom, which allowed me to sleep until 7... Amazing, I'm so happy to get 5 hours of sleep nowadays. Still ready to fall asleep at the drop of a hat, but feel more energetic about it.
